FWMJ Mini Rant: Asher Roth and his Nappy Headed Hoes

By April 24, 2009Misc, Real Life

Now, I don’t think this necessarily means he’s racist, more than it means he’s an idiot with inappropriate humour for the arena he’s chosen to pursue and perform in. He’s also a dumbass for deleting said offensive Tweets, like they didn’t happen, as if folks don’t have screen capture. Idiot.

But let’s stay focused, who actually likes this guy’s music? I mean, really.

I know a few people that claim to like it, but I figure that’s just being political and playing the game, and, you know, Asher doesn’t seem like a bad kid. Seems pretty easy to get along with to be honest.

But let’s stay focused. Who actually likes this guy’s music, that counts, you know, when it comes to the canon of hip hop. I’m sure he’ll get there if he keeps at it and keeps getting hook ups based on his management team calling in favours all over the industry, but I can’t see naan one person I know that likes rap ridin’ around with this guy’s music blarrin’ out the car with a screwface on like the first time you heard Mic Geronimo’s “Masta I.C.” (Remix) or something. In fact, I can’t think of a record that’s thrilled me less, with as many accolades at the moment than Asher’s project. I’d honestly put on a Audio Book or Snoop’s No Limit Records album before this.

I gave it a go, honestly, but man, snoresville. I can’t front, he can make words rhyme a little bit, but a) I’m not tryin’ to hear him rap about Teddy Ruxpin b) I don’t really like these C+ Danger Mouse/Danger Doom-y kind of beats when Danger Mouse does em. You can’t sample rock music and not make it sound lame/dry/boring. I understand we’ve got different generations of hip hop fans and listeners out there now, but I don’t know how anyone that’s been listening to rap since Run DMC and enjoyed rap music with some weight and gravity to it in the early to mid 90s can find this anything more than a vain, mediocre, novelty social experient with a hardcore marketing blizzard. Peep the god Dart Adams’ take in his blog post.

Dart Adams: “Dart’s Rant Of The Day: Hype, Lies & Corprate Co-signs”.

Now, Rick Ross album (you was right Kay, 9th Wonder, Jessie Maguire) that’s an unexpected kick in the neck. The beats on that album SLAM! He still a liar no doubt the beats crank!

P.S. Are we still mad at Eminem for callin’ his (black) ex-girlfriend when he was 16 (?) a bitch?

So I saw this guy during a commercial on MTV. You know when they play the tour dates they have someone’s video playing in the background?

At first I thought, “Is this a skit? Does MTV have a new comedy show coming out?” I thought maybe it was the new incarnation of Lyricist Lounge or at the very least another Nick Cannon-esque make me laugh type thingy. But I quickly deaded all those thoughts, when I answered my own question, “Nope, it’s probably real, remember the Spice Girls? You thought they were joking too.” I sighed. Then turned to another rerun of Law & Order: SVU.

*And yes, I do have full conversations with myself where I answer back.

    1) Another industry-hyped…excuse me, another internet-hyped mediocre album.

    2) I need more Don Cannon production in my life.

    3) Where the hell was the Devin The Dude collab?

    4) NEW PODCASTS?!?!?!

I come from that era and I think Asher can spit. I don’t see why this is so hard grasp.

i agreed he can put words together okay, but so can 100,001 rappers. His songs are a bore (to me).

Exactly. I don’t think Asher is necessarily whack…Just as a hip-hop fan who knows of a bunch of others that can rap circles around him and have a lot more talent–I can’t help but get a little mad when there is all this hype and energy towards this kid –whose paid NO DUES and has a machine behind him because kids at my college love his single.

.. And i’m NOT from “that era”.

had to google him, found a youtube page filled with artists like cee-lo listening to his music with him on some emperor’s new clothes steez, each giving their own version of the glazed/stupefied look while roth nods his head in the zone like he just made the chronic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP2SgFIkhKE).

while i appreciate the latent humor of it all i can’t. i cannot. i’m going back to my cave :[

asher’s CD is really smart business-wise. his team knows what market he needs to go for. does the “hood”, or the “block” need to like him? do blogs for “real” hiphop heads? doesn’t matter. you don’t make money selling to that demographic. you real make money and get real exposure when you get that MTV, suburban market. because otherwise, honestly how else are you gonna make it as a white rapper?

as far as skills go, kid can rhyme no doubt. and at least he’s rhyming about his real life and what he knows. rick ross is an actor. i mean officer rawse is entertaining, but in the way that thespians are entertaining.

  • FWMJ says:

i don’t disagree with you at all bose

Truthfully, I can’t seem to get into his music. I listened to a few songs & they weren’t wack, but they weren’t amazing either. He’s cool, just overrated IMO. Now to the shit he tweeted yesterday… SMH. I caught it live. Then he’s gonna call his PR & make his PR tweet “Just got the call that Asher Roth’s Twitter got hacked”… my ass. Anyways, someone send me some Asher Roth music that will blow my mind ???

    [email protected]

    Holla.

  • Classic says:

meh. im sure he was just joking.
if you listen to his joints…..thats all he does.
im sure he erased his “tweets” (or whatever you call it)
because alotta black peeps are quick to pull the race card
and make such a big deal outta the smallest things.

    just like in this case.

now it wldnt be such a big issue if DOOM were to tweet “Nappyheadedhoes”
people would think its funny. double standards.

  • Iman says:

I can’t get into his music at all. So many other rappers who are WAYYYY better and make sense. This guy doesn’t make sense.

  • FWMJ says:

like my girl said on facebook:
“it was a blunder, but a racist one. If you think of race as a system of power (puts on social work activist hat) then this is an example of dudes like Asher don’t have to think twice about what they say whereas you and I think about it all the time – and yes we don’t jump at making jokes about whitey in their presence (unless we know them, know them). It may not be racism on purpose, but it’s still engrained in it nonetheless.”

but whatever, let’s focus on the music. his music is instant nyquil
