Rest In Power Trish Keenan (Broadcast)

By January 14, 2011January 17th, 2011Music, News, Real Life

Early last decade a friend on a graphic design message board I used to frequent pasted a Real Media (remember that format?) video of this funky yet dissonant UK band’s song “Papercuts”.

I fell in love with Broadcast.

I was like, “this reminds me of a decade I never lived in.” Born in the 80s ya know. So naive. The music was great, with a very psychadelic finger print, yet poppy enough keep your foot tapping. And the voice. The voice, seemingly dazed, distant and detached, but very sweet and sharp songwriting. I was a fan, and quickly searched out everything they’d released to that point, checking back every couple of years to find more. Like last year I just purchased Broadcast And The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age and thoroughly enjoyed the instrumentals and mini songs.

Broadcast is definitely one of my favourite bands, as anyone that’s friends with me on Facebook or follows my Tumblr can attest (occasionally I’ll go on a sharing/posting spaz-out session posting all manner of Broadcast songs and videos back to back to back to back).

Trish Keenan, the lead singer of Broadcast passed away earlier today from a bout with pneumonia. Bummy knews to wake up to today. Rest in Power.

Broadcast is pretty dope. You should check out Stereo Lab. I recommend starting with their Dots and Loops album but really anything will give you a good sense of what they’re about. They’re similar to Broadcast
