RIK Throwback: EQuality’s Verse on “Piano Maze” off Spitten King

By September 25, 2009Music, Premiere, Real Life

Lyrics first, because the words in rap are still important to me.

I’ve loved this song for quite some time. EQuality’s verse is that deal, and expertly delivered. It’s no wonder Ahmir name dropped (sort of) H.I.S.D. as one of his groups to look forward to.

“Piano Maze”

You hear the keys play?
I heard some kids say,

“You one dem rappers that be talkin’ bout movin’ keys, wey?”

Out of state, out of mind, I don’t mind grind
but can cupid throw the darts across the heart, fine
as if art was on the vine of wine
I mean, better with time, all commercial his rhymes

Blind—

like he’s in love with the dough
we can both make the bread, but I’m in love with the flow
never looked toward the sun, so she’s in love with the snow
of that ivory white
hit the note for tonight
You hear the crack in her voice? I heard that crack was a choice
in eight-oh, now oh-eight they move weight…?

Wait!

for that shot to the nose, like the sphinx, I suppose
she rose as a rose that was planted in concrete
standing with both feet, glued to a street where the ends tend to meet

as a means…

to justify why ebony blacks…

tend to act like they trapped in…the piano maze.
