By August 1, 2009August 3rd, 2009Music, Real Life

Slum Village Forever.

Feel free to share your experiences with Slum Village’s music in the comments. Their influence is so much greater than a lot of people will realise or even admit and Baatin is one of the most creative and unique MCs to really do it. I know he had a big influence on my crew. Show your appreciation, and peace to the greats you walk amongst right this moment.

Just a month ago,I was watching him rock the mic with T3 and Elzhi. He was a little rusty, but he still rocked it . He was getting ready to drop his new single and the Slum Village reunion album. Rest in peace, you will be missed. Now you can rock with Dilla again in heaven.

Never met the man in person, but I think I can say he was my second favorite MC to flow over dilla beats besides dilla himself. So out there, yet down to earth somehow, hilarious as an mc, entertaining as shit, great on stage.

    Rest in peace man.

And peace to T3. My heart goes out to him.

People didn’t have time to understand him. When i became a fan of his (already a fan of Slum Village) Okayplayer tour at Stubbs in Austin T.X. 2000. When Slum came out this guy was jumping, and performing on the speakers getting everyone hype. I felt like a little baby that starts getting excited when someone is jumping around in front of him. I knew then this guy was like the busta, O.D.B., or Fatlip of the group and he represented well on the mic. Its sad that many people didn’t experience slum with the original three, they truly were special. R.I.P. Baatin

I was just listening to SV/J-88 earlier today-and now this! OMG! RIP Baatin!

Man. This breaks my heart. Dude battled back from depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and a drug addition to get back to this point. We saw him at Rock the Bells just two weeks ago in DC and you could tell he was still on the drugs. When the autopsy comes out – I would be surprised if it wasn’t drug-induced. Poor guy fell off the stage and cut his arm during the show, forgot his lines. With all of that noted, he will not, and should not be remembered as that. He was a terrific emcee, and SV would not have been without him. I’m blasting that Fantastic Volume 2 right now in memory.

    RIP, Baatin!

Rest In Power to Baatin. One of Conant Gardens and Detroit City’s finest.

I didn’t know Baatin on a personal level but I was a truly a fan of this cat on a musical level from afar and also the whole SV. Much condolences go out to his family and friends.

So, I just want to say this to whoever is reading this.
We losing too many of our brothas, In every which way it may be. Whether it’s through bad physical health, bad mental health, or by violence. Something needs to change in our culture and community. This could’ve been preventable in my personal opinion, no disrespect to anyone. If cats are truly fam and crew, people need to start really looking out, helping each other loving each other while we still alive and on this earth.

I also want to speak on how I got acquainted with Baatin and SV from a musical standpoint,.
I was a fan of Slum Village since jumpstreet. I bought ‘Fantastic Vol. 2″ when it first dropped on CD on a tuesday. I wasn’t even looking for that joint, maybe I was, maybe I wasn’t, can’t recall it right now. I didn’t even know if it was released yet. I would just go to the record store and check from A to Z to see what was out. And I came across it and I was like “oh snap that Slum album came out, I copping it most definitely.” Because before that time ‘Climax (Girl Shit)’ video was in rotation on ‘Rap City’ for a while. College radio in the city that I was living in Florida was spinning joints like ‘Raise it Up’ and ‘I Don’t Know’. These cats sound was so different and so ill to me at the time. Nobody else had that sound and production style that ‘Dilla (R.I.P.)’ brought. And T3 and Baatin’s flow, style and rhyme scheme was new and so ill as well. I’m going to say this again nobody sounded like these cats at that time. That shit was so ill and original to me and I liked what they was doing from jump. And every album that proceeded the first one I bought. Everything from J-Dilla’s solo joints, J-88, T3’s solo joints, Dirty District compilations, Fantastic Vol. 1 re-release, etc. Also, everybody else that was associated with SV and the crew.

So, I can say supported these brothas from the beginning because I felt what these brothas was doing and adding on to the culture was original and so ill to me. And I was looking foward to the new album called ‘Villa Manifesto’. Hopefully it will still be released.

I give props where props is due. I’m a die hard B-Boy since a young head. And I’m 30 years old now and I still listen to Rap music and is still a full participant in this culture called Hip Hop. But it’s not like it once was.

I respect cats who are trying to add on to culture with originality, individual style, flow and lyricism. And Baatin (R.I.P.), Jay Dee (R.I.P), T3 and later on Elzhi brought that. Slum Village is truly legendary and fantastic to me. I’ma “Raise It Up” all day and forever for these brothas. Peace and Love.
