    thehoustongirl –

like you…i cannot seem to let go of this post, either. : – )

i agree with you that aubrey needs to find his niche. i also agree that he is not focused, and has much to learn (like a whole lot of artists).

whether you are “street” (i use quotes because i am not always sure what that term means), or a nerd, things tend to work better for you, and you are more believable, when you stick to being yourself. i don’t think that his race has much to do with things beyond the fact that he said that his mother exposed him to different cultures (which can benefit him in many, positive ways).

to half-a** answer your question…i think that it is good to be signed to a label where there are more like-minded individuals because they may understand your vision better than those who appear to be a little less like-minded than you are. these days, it is hard to say which label might allow aubrey the most freedom to do “this or that.” labels are scrambling now, and are dipping their toes in everything, because they need to make money, by any means necessary.

regardless, it is still aubrey’s responsibility to “make it pop” (“i don’t wanna see your face…”) (copyright hustle skwad).

    bavu –

just got word that A TRIBE OF SOULS CALLED DE LA just went platinum! LOL

j/k. i kinda see your point because it was hard as hell to get our favorite rappers to go gold in the 80s/90s.

  • Joy says:

    i meant “quotation marks”

  • bavu says:

i would buy A TRIBE OF SOULS CALLED DE LA no questions asked

  • Chucky says:

I believe your theory is right on……

  • Rick says:

i think its possible, no one ever buys cd’s anymore and everyone one is on his dick. Of course people will think 15 bucks ain’t bad for their favorite rapper out and actually buy his album

  • Luigi-Bo87 says:

I don’t think he will be the last to have a gold debut because we all know some clown with a hit few ringtone joints will comw within the next couple years and do the same.

BUT people seem to jump on the Drake hate bandwagon a little quickly. I honestly think Drake is a pretty decent rapper and could really be something if he kept working on his crafft, but he’s definitely not as great as a lot of people hype him up to be. A lot of people were introduced to Drake via Lil Wayne (aka AFTER he shifted his style for a more mainstream appeal) and only know of his work from then on out. His earlier songs/mixtapes actually had a few nice joints with dope production and a lot of underground influences (beats by 9th wonder, working with Dwele, Slakah the Beatchild, etc.)

I can agree with people saying Drake is just trying to fit in but it could be because of his age (21) and he NEEDS to business-wise if he wants to stay relevent.

I see Drake as an opportunity missed. He made it to radio with no label and then signed with a label for what? The Internet is the new marketing department. And guess what people its free! How he managed to get everyone attention without a major behind him is an accomplishment as well as a sign of the times. Labels are dying a slow death. iTunes is to the record industry what Target and Best Buy is to independent record stores. It is an unfortunate truth. People think you ink with a major and get paid. No you get a loan and a boatload of problems. Drake appeared to have bucked that, but eventually got caught up in the tangled web they weave. I hope his spirit and passion for hip-hop is not suffocated in the process….

  • vegatrondon says:

I believe his deal gives him all rights to his masters. That would argue the point of not signing with roc nation. If he got the buzz without a deal and signed a deal to have rights to all his masters then I believe he is pretty business savvy already.

Meanwhile J.Cole, who in my opion is more dope signed a 360 deal with Roc Nation. So Hov is picking his pockets on everthing he does. Drake not so much.

    Drake-Owns Masters
    J.Cole-360 deal

Google the difference and tell me who signed the better deal. But Im definately happy the J.Cole signed that deal because he has been a pleasent surprise so far out of all these young cats.

As far as him not knowing his history, that applies to alot of others as well. How quick we forget that Lupe didnt know all of tribe’s lyrics on the hiphophonors a couple years back. Then went and said he never really listened to tribe.

In conlusion, I am not a drake fan, I am not a drake hater, I will not buy his album, but I will say that I rather hear him on the radio vs his “mentor” weezy baby.

    peace!

  • Heinz says:

lol these replies really show y’all age or ignorant minds….

    lets get shit straight.

Drake grew up with some money. So what. His father was NOT the one who got him his connections to get into the music industry nor did he help get him signed. His father is not rich (listen to the songs, he clearly states his pops hitting him up for money). His uncle did not get him signed. Nobody BUT his team Octobers Very Own / ATF had anything to do with So Far Gone….nobody.

We sit here and act like the “native tounge” artists all grew up poor. smh. A lot of them grew up in normal middle class neighborhoods. Who cares. It doesn’t make you less or more hiphop. MORE IMPORTANTLY it doesn’t make you more or less of an emcee. Majority of you sound salty that YOUR FAVORITE emcee is not the one who is getting shine. You guys brought up J. Cole. (stop trying to compare these two and let them become the 2 leaders of this new generation i fully believe they both will do that)….well guess what. J. Cole was JUST IN THE FUCKING STUDIO working with Drake. smh. If you actually sat down to listen to his songs, from when he first started out you would see that he is a hiphop head. He listened to the same shit you do, that you all call classics. I used to see D on RapCity at concerts outside of Elemental (anyone from Tdot would remember these shows)…He has opened doors for EVERY Toronto artist right now as all the labels eyes checking out more of our artists. I know this for a fact as many of my friends are being sought after by major labels….not discredting Kardi, Sauks etc…they opened the door for Drake to tear down the walls and let all of Toronto be seen.

What this discussion SHOULD have been about, is when are FANS and the ARTISTS themselves gonna realize that not EVERY emcee or “underground artist” is gonna blow up. A lot of them don’t have it to make it on that mega star status. Doesn’t make them less of an emcee. Just makes them good at what they are good at. People need to know what role they play and learn how to cake off just that. If none of you notice of the emcees who are still relevant today from the 90’s are the ones that pushed their artistry beyond the lines yall keep trying to make for them. Stop trying to box in your fav artists so they can keep being your great little secret. shit is fucking lame.

this became one hell of an essay contest
and i really threw ya’ll off by showing drake’s uncle, apologies for that
but it really was a simple topic, and a single question
will he be the last rapper to debut > 500K?
    answer: YES
    peace

  • josh says:

the drake theory is referring to the last rapper to sell 500k on his DEBUT album ever. its not talking about the last rapper to ever sell an album that will sell over 500k…..
